Material

Fibre: Jute (Corchorus olitorius)
Weave density: Medium — a firm weave with narrow gaps. Holds anything larger than a coin.
Woven by hand: Yes — handwoven. Small irregularities in the pattern are the mark of that.
Dyed: No. This is the fibre's own colour, which is why it varies between batches.

How it changes

Initial shedding: Yes. Expect visible fibre dust for the first month or so, more if you move the piece often. It reduces but never reaches zero with jute.
Shade & texture: Batches vary by up to ±10 % in shade and ±5 % in size. Two of these bought a year apart will not match exactly. That is a property of the fibre, not a fault.
Shape under load: Loaded fibre takes a set. Empty it and give it a day or two and most of the shape returns. Left loaded above the tested figure, or left damp under load, the change can be permanent.
Smell when new: A dry sacking smell for the first one to two weeks. It fades with airing.

Where it can live

Damp rooms: Dry rooms only. In a bathroom or an unventilated room this fibre stays damp and can grow mould.
Cleaning: Vacuum on low suction or brush the dust out, then spot-clean with a barely damp cloth and dry at once. Not washable, not machine washable.
Heat and flame: Natural fibre burns. Keep it away from candles, hobs, heaters and fireplaces.

Wall fixings are not included

You need a wall anchor suited to your wall — plasterboard, brick, concrete and timber all need different fixings. Rawlplugs, screws and anchors are not supplied. Fix it to a sound surface, rated for at least five times the load you intend to put in it, and check it after the first week. We make no safety guarantee for a fixing we did not supply or install.

Keep away from open flame and heat

Natural fibre burns. Keep it away from candles, fireplaces, heaters, hobs and hot appliances. We make no flame-retardancy claim for any piece we sell.
